Traffic Information

What's traffic like in the I-40 Corridor: Triangle Improvements project area?

For real-time traffic information, please visit drivenc.gov or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
Interstate 40 is the main route for North Carolina’s robust Research Triangle region. Connecting I-85 to the northwest and I-95 to the southeast, I-40 is a major corridor between Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, Durham, Morrisville, Cary, Raleigh, Garner and Clayton.

Thousands of commuters rely on I-40 as their central route to Research Triangle Park, the largest research park in the country. I-40 also provides passage to and from popular coastal destinations.

As traffic congestion in the Triangle area continues to increase, improvements to the interstate are critical to not only the continued commercial growth of the area, but it will also help decrease traffic delays and make travel safer.

Improvement Projects

The N.C. Department of Transportation is working to widen I-40 as well as improve interchanges from I-85 in Hillsborough to Clayton.

Several projects along the corridor are either in development or under construction.
