Based on initial studies and the public's input from public meetings in August 2016 and August 2017, the N.C. Department of Transportation proposes
a two-lane median-divided roadway with sidewalks and bicycle lanes for Hopkins Road and Big Mill Farm Road.
The road extension would be a four-lane median-divided roadway within the new Business 40/U.S. 421 interchange. The
new interchange would be a partial cloverleaf interchange with ramps and loops in the northwest and southeast quadrants.
Based on feedback received from the public and local officials following the August 2017 public meeting, NCDOT has made some design changes:
- New U-turns have been added at multiple intersections along the corridor.
- A left-over has also been added on Hopkins Road to access a proposed shared driveway for the Hopkins Road Animal Hospital and Morse & Doyle Dentistry.
- A small retaining wall has been added south of Selwyck Lane to minimize property impacts.
Additionally, impacts to properties have been reduced by:
- Shortening the southbound right turn lane from Big Mill Farm Road onto Timberview Road
- Shortening the southbound right turn lane from Hopkins Road to Bluff School Road
- Adjusting the design near Skate World
The project team is continuing to coordinate with local utility providers to determine final impacts of the project.
