RAISE Grant
In August 2022, the N.C. Department of Transportation received $3.4 million in (RAISE) Grant funding to support the planning and preliminary design (the stage in which general project location and design concepts are determined) of mobility hubs in Apex, Franklinton, Henderson, Norlina, Sanford, Wake Forest and Youngsville.
Activities include feasibility and site assessments for each of the communities. Four of the communities will receive information pertaining to compliance and preliminary engineering in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The project will lead to increased access to transportation options for each community, better connecting rail transit and other transportation services.
Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements Program Grant
In November 2021, NCDOT partnered with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to submit a successful grant application for S-Line funding through the Federal Railroad Administration Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements Program, or CRISI.
With the addition of CRISI funds, NCDOT, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, along with other local, federal and state partners, will be able to complete preliminary engineering design for the S-Line between Raleigh and Richmond.
