RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Winter Weather
NCDOT crews are working around the clock to clear roads impacted by yet another winter storm. Snowfall mostly affected our northern counties in the central and eastern parts of the state, while locations farther south still saw a wintry mix.
Motorists are reminded to stay off the roads if possible during winter weather events - for their own safety and to allow our crews to clear roadways safely and efficiently.
Edmondson Bridge Dedication
An Edgecombe County bridge now bears the name of a married couple who once ran a general store in the Old Sparta community.
The bridge that carries N.C. 42 over the Tar River in Edgecombe County was dedicated last week to Katie and Karo Edmondson.
The Edmondsons farmed and ran the store, which served the community as a bank, a grocery store, a news outlet and a fellowship hall.
Garrett Morgan Page Program
NCDOT is launching a new page program for high school students interested in learning about careers in state government and the transportation industry.
The Garrett A. Morgan Page Program runs from March 24-28 and is designed for high school juniors and seniors attending Title I schools in North Carolina.
Title I is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance and support to schools with high numbers of students from low-income families.
Participants in the program will engage with NCDOT professionals, enjoy hands-on activities, ride NC By Train, and learn more about transportation in our state.
The program is named for an African American inventor who created the forerunner of the modern traffic light in 1923.
Interested students from Title I schools are encouraged to
apply and
learn more.
