Through the Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation program, or CASSI, the N.C. Department of Transportation has piloted two similar, but different models of all-electric, low-speed automated shuttles across five different projects to date – three in partnership with EasyMile using their EZ10 Gen 3 shuttle and two in partnership with Beep using a Navya Autonom shuttle. NCDOT tested the shuttles at two university campuses, a recreational public lands site, and a municipal park in fixed-route, circulator services on short routes that offered first and last mile connections.

In Partnership with EasyMile

NCDOT started CASSI as a pilot through a partnership with EasyMile, a France-based automated vehicle manufacturer.

EasyMile’s EZ10 Gen 3 shuttle was tested in the following communities:

  • Pilot 1 – Jan. 8-9, 2020: Two-day demonstration at the N.C. Transportation Summit at the Raleigh Convention Center
  • Pilot 2 – Jan. 21-Feb. 25, 2020: Three-week deployment at N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus

In Partnership with Beep

NCDOT completed its projects with EasyMile and then partnered with Beep for two projects that were completed in 2023. Beep operated an automated shuttle manufactured by France-based Navya that relied on LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and GPS technology to navigate on pre-determined, pre-mapped fixed routes.

Navya’s Autonom shuttle was tested with support from Beep in the following communities:
