Workforce Development

The N.C. Department of Transportation Division of Aviation's workforce development programs focus on attracting and preparing the talent pipeline to support North Carolina's aerospace sector.

​Training & Educating Talent

  • Internships & fellowships: The Division of Aviation participates in NCDOT internships and fellowships that allow college students to gain experience in air transportation careers. 

  • Drone training & permitting:​ Workshops provided for government and commercial groups to prepare participants to obtain a North Carolina drone operator permit and operate drones in the state.

  • Airport professional development: Professional development and resources, offered through a contract with N.C. State University Institute for Transportation Research and Education, to strengthen management of the state’s public airports.

  • Career fairs & demonstrations: The Division of Aviation staff host and participate in career fairs and at public events that engage North Carolina’s existing and future aviation workforce and talent. 

Inspiring the Next Generation 

  • Aviation Art Contest: This annual competition, sponsored by the North Carolina Airports Association, engages young people ages 6-17 who live or attend school in North Carolina to explore different aspects of aviation through art. 

  • ACE Academies: Grants of up to $3,000 per academy are awarded to public airports to help fund aviation career-focused summer academies for middle and high school students.

  • Hangar Tours: The Division of Aviation hosts tours of its hangar for school groups and clubs.
