Department of Transportation Division of Aviation's workforce development programs focus on attracting and preparing the talent pipeline to support North Carolina's aerospace sector.Training & Educating TalentInternships & fellowships: The Division of Aviation participates in NCDOT internships and fellowships that allow college students to gain experience in air transportation careers. Drone training & permitting: Workshops provided for government and commercial groups to prepare participants to obtain a North Carolina drone operator permit and operate drones in the state.Airport professional development: Professional development and resources, offered through a contract with N.C. State University Institute for Transportation Research and Education, to strengthen management of the state’s public airports.Career fairs & demonstrations: The Division of Aviation staff host and participate in career fairs and at public events that engage North Carolina’s existing and future aviation workforce and talent. Inspiring the Next Generation Aviation Art Contest: This annual competition, sponsored by the North Carolina Airports Association, engages young people ages 6-17 who live or attend school in North Carolina to explore different aspects of aviation through art. ACE Academies: Grants of up to $3,000 per academy are awarded to public airports to help fund aviation career-focused summer academies for middle and high school students.Hangar Tours: The Division of Aviation hosts tours of its hangar for school groups and clubs.
