This Week at NCDOT: Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day, NCDMV Kiosk Milestone, etc.

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day

One opportunity NCDOT hosts each year is “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day," which gives students a chance to explore engineering careers through fun, hands-on STEM activities.

From building bridges to testing paper airplanes, each challenge is designed to spark creativity and problem solving.

NCDOT employees volunteered as mentors and participated in a panel discussion at the March 27 event, inspiring future engineers.

NCDMV Kiosk Milestone

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles self-service kiosk pilot has reached a milestone in its first year, serving 25,000 customers at Harris Teeter locations in Wake, Mecklenburg and Cumberland counties.

The kiosks offer driver license and ID card renewals and duplicates, along with vehicle registration renewals and property tax payments for new vehicles, allowing customers to receive their products immediately.

With nine kiosks currently in place and more planned, this pilot is modernizing DMV services at no cost to the state.

Bridge Dedications

The N.C. 130 bridge over Interstate 95 was named after Patrolman James H. Marshburn, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in 1964, just two months after completing his training.

The bridge on N.C. 73 over Interstate 85 in Concord was dedicated to Officer Jackie L. Daniel, who died in 1994 while serving the N.C. State Highway Patrol, honoring his seven years of dedicated service to the community.
