William's passion for transportation work in his community helped him land an internship with NCDOT in 2024.
Today, he is busy repairing state roads and bridges in the area where he grew up, working full time as a transportation worker in the agency's Yancey County Maintenance Yard.

This week, family and friends joined transportation officials and local leaders to dedicate a bridge in honor of Patrolman Richard W. Jackson.
Patrolman Jackson was killed in the line of duty in September 1949, when he was involved in an automobile crash during a vehicle pursuit near Newport.
The bridge on U.S. 70 over the Newport River in Carteret County now bears Patrolman Jackson's name.
Jackson was also a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II.
