RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Hurricane Helene Update
As we approach nearly two months since Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina, progress to roadway repairs continues in the western part of the state.
The N.C. Department of Transportation continues to work alongside contract crews to reopen roads previously closed due to the storm.
Crews from across the state are engaged in emergency roadway repair work such as temporary bridge installations, slide and shoulder repairs, and roadway reconstruction focusing on major corridors and communities with limited access.
The public can follow the department’s efforts to reopen roads on a new dashboard created for this recovery. The
dashboard is linked on
DriveNC.gov.
As a reminder, the end of hurricane season is November 30.
We continue our gratitude to the thousands of employees assisting in the repair and recovery of the western part of our state.
6 Month Until Real ID
The federal REAL ID implementation date is now less than six months away.
Having a REAL ID can make it more convenient if you fly commercially or visit federal, military, or nuclear facilities, but getting a REAL ID is completely optional.
After May 7, if you don’t have a REAL ID, you’ll need to provide additional identification, along with your standard license or ID.
Millions of North Carolinians have a REAL ID. If you decide you want one too, please visit
NCREALID.gov for more information.
Timberlake Bridge Dedication
The Smithfield Road bridge over Interstate 95 outside Fayetteville now honors a State Trooper who died decades ago in the line of duty.
Patrolman Henry T. Timberlake was 30 years old when he died from a vehicle crash in 1939. When the crash occurred in Cumberland County, Timberlake was leaving one car crash to investigate another one.
The Highway Patrol joined the family and NCDOT officials for a ceremony last week in Fayetteville.
