RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Post Helene Recovery Efforts
The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced this week it is targeting New Year’s Day for opening a lane of Interstate 40 in each direction through the Pigeon River Gorge.
People can find the latest information on road closures and our recovery efforts on a new dashboard linked on
DriveNC.gov.
Also, municipalities that received Powell Bill funding in September are reminded they can use these funds that typically aid in street resurfacing to cover certain hurricane recovery-related costs, including road and bridge repairs and debris removal.

Interstate 95 Lanes Open
The ride along a 13-mile stretch of I-95 north of Fayetteville is now smoother and less congested.
A contractor has opened all eight lanes of the newly widened highway between Exits 58 and 71 in Cumberland and Harnett counties.
More construction is underway to widen and modernize the interstate north and south of this section, so drivers can expect to see more improvements in the coming years.
Political Sign Removal
Finally, the NCDOT would like to remind North Carolina residents political signs must be taken down by Nov. 15. State law requires the signs be removed 10 days after the election.
NCDOT has the authority to remove any signs that violate the statute, create safety hazards for travelers or interfere with maintenance operations.
