MATTHEWS – This week, the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $10.7 million contract to connect McKee Road between E. John Street and Pleasant Plains Road in Matthews.
The project was initially submitted for funding consideration by the former Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization, now the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization. The project was in its Metropolitan Transportation Plan to improve connectivity and access both to Pleasant Plains Road and East John Street.
Contractor NJR Group Inc. earned the project to add a 0.9-mile, two-lane road between the two points, adding easier mobility and a new connection to several neighborhoods
Tree clearing for the project can start next month, with other operations able to begin in winter 2025. Overall project completion is anticipated for spring 2027.
Any lane closures on McKee Road, E. John Street and Pleasant Plains Road will be restricted to off-peak travel times.
