New Diverging Diamond Interchange Opens in Guilford County

GREENSBORO – Drivers will see a new traffic pattern starting this afternoon at the rebuilt interchange of U.S. 29 and Reedy Fork Parkway.

The N.C. Department of Transportation reconfigured the junction into a diverging diamond interchange, which redirects drivers in two directions to temporarily cross to the left side of the road. This innovative design enhances traffic flow, reduces delays and improves safety.

The project, which began last summer, involved the reconstruction of the previous interchange, shifting it south and implementing the diverging diamond design. This design better handles high volumes of traffic to flow through the intersection without the need for additional lanes, which can cause impacts to businesses.

In addition to the interchange itself, the project included the realignment of Summit Avenue as it joins Reedy Fork Parkway. The previous bridge over U.S. 29, originally built in 1961, has been replaced with a modern structure that meets current design and safety standards.

Motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new traffic patterns at the interchange. For more information on how to navigate a diverging diamond interchange, visit the NCDOT’s safety and mobility webpage.
