SPRING LAKE - The N.C. Department of Transportation is improving about 10 miles of N.C. 690 between Vass and Spring Lake.
The work, which will improve highway safety and make for a smoother ride, is being completed in phases under separate contracts managed by Highway Divisions 6 and 8. Below is a rundown of the improvements:
- About 6 miles of N.C. 690 on Fort Liberty between N.C. 24/27 and the Cumberland-Moore county line have recently been resurfaced with wider paved shoulders. Soon, another NCDOT contractor will add to this same stretch of highway high-visibility pavement markings and rumble strips along the center line and edge lines of the road to warn drivers.
- Almost 2 miles of N.C. 690 near its McPherson Road intersection and 2.2 miles of N.C. 690 on Fort Liberty between the Cumberland-Moore county line and the bridge over Buffalo Creek is expected to be awarded for a contract next year. Both sections will get high-visibility pavement markings and rumble strips designed to reduce noise along the roadside while also delivering the necessary auditory and vibratory cues to drivers.
Division 8 wants to resurface these two sections of the highway in Moore County before proceeding with plans to add turn lanes and make other improvements along the highway in a separate project slated to begin construction in 2028. The department plans to begin acquiring additional right of way for this project beginning next month.
In addition, Division 8 has recently made these other safety improvements to N.C. 690 in Moore County:
- Installed all-way stops at McPherson Road; and
- Installed flexible bollards to delineate the intersection of N.C. 690 and Morrison Bridge Road.
