Junction Near Rocky Mount Will Be Reconstructed into a Roundabout

ROCKY MOUNT – A Nash County intersection will close next week for the construction of a roundabout.

North Old Carriage Road where it crosses Reges Store Road/Green Hills Road is scheduled to be closed from 7 a.m. Sept. 3 until 5 p.m. Sept. 16, weather permitting. Contract workers for the N.C. Department of Transportation will rebuild it into a single-lane roundabout, which will replace this intersection's existing traffic signal.

Roundabouts improve safety and traffic flow, eliminating the need for drivers to stop and wait at a red light. This NCDOT webpage explains how to easily navigate the circular designs.

Multiple detours will be signed for this closure, but drivers will need to instead use either Exit 464 or Exit 461 on U.S. 64 to avoid the closure. Drivers should anticipate a longer commute and be patient and alert when traveling near the construction.

This roundabout is part of a project that began in 2022 to widen North Old Carriage Road to four lanes with a raised median between Eastern Avenue and Reges Store/Green Hills roads. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
