FAYETTEVILLE – Part of a road in western Fayetteville will permanently close next week for a highway interchange.
A portion of Strickland Bridge Road that runs between Stoney Point Road and Century Circle will be removed to make way for Interstate 295, also known as the Fayetteville Outer Loop.
After this permanent closure takes effect on Sept. 4, people living on the residential streets of Weathergreen and Leland drives will have to turn right onto Strickland Bridge Road.
A new alignment of Strickland Bridge Road will be built that will span I-295, creating a new interchange with on/off ramps behind New Century International Middle School.
This interchange and road alignment are part of a $152 million contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation in 2022 to construct a 5-mile segment of the Outer Loop stretching between Raeford Road and Camden Road. This segment is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
In July, the interchange at Camden Road outside Hope Mills partially opened to traffic, extending the Outer Loop southward to I-95 in northern Robeson County.
