RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Tropical Storm Debby
Debby impacted North Carolina as the state’s first tropical storm of the season.
The storm brought heavy rains and flooding to central and eastern North Carolina and closed hundreds of roads.
NCDOT urges people to never drive through flooded roads or try to go around barricades that are there for your protection.
DriveNC
DriveNC has long been the go-to website for people seeking real-time traffic information in North Carolina.
This is especially important during major storms, like Debby.
The driving force behind DriveNC is Kelly Wells.
Wells also plays a key role in improving traffic safety laws and emergency communications in North Carolina.
For all her efforts, the state Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins gave Wells a special shout-out during last week’s Board of Transportation meeting.
DMV Kiosks Vehicle Registration
The NCDMV Express self-service kiosks now offer vehicle registration renewals and property tax payments for new vehicles.
The kiosks will print a license plate sticker and registration card upon completion of these transactions at select locations in Raleigh, Charlotte and Fayetteville.
NCDMV will announce six new kiosks later this month, with three each in Wake and Mecklenburg counties.
There are also plans to add a kiosk at Fort Liberty.
DMV Saturday Hours
Just a quick reminder to take advantage of NCDMV’s summer Saturday walk-in services at
16 locations across the state. There are just two weekends left. Saturday, Aug. 24 will be the final day.
Services offered from 8 a.m. to noon, include driver license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances and road tests.
Back to School Safety
With summer coming to a close and schools preparing for the return of students, NCDOT wants to get you prepped for a safe school year.
Some safety tips include:
- Arrive early to your bus stop.
- Never walk behind a school bus.
- Walk, never run to the school bus stop.
- Look both ways before crossing the street.
