High Point Highway Requires Temporary Closure

HIGH POINT – A portion of U.S. 29 North/Business 85 North in High Point will be closed this weekend in preparation for an upcoming traffic shift associated with the ongoing work to improve an interchange.

Contract crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation plan to detour traffic off U.S. 29 North at the South Main Street exit from 8 p.m. today until 6 a.m. Monday. Drivers will take South Main Street to East Fairfield Road to Brentwood Street, returning to U.S. 29 North.

The detour, which is about 3 miles long, will not affect U.S. 29 South. Transportation officials advise drivers to plan ahead for short delays in the area and remain alert. This closure is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled.

The northbound detour is needed so crews can do paving operations as part of a project to upgrade the highway's South Main Street interchange. The upgrades include replacing a bridge dating to the 1950s, widening South Main Street and bringing the interchange to modern design standards. The work also will necessitate a traffic shift for U.S. 29 North onto a temporary bridge this fall.
