This Week at NCDOT: Future Storm Prep, US Open Travel, Highway Dedication

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

NCDOT Prepares for Hurricane Season

With hurricane season underway, the NCDOT is preparing for potential future storms. Crews across the state are ensuring equipment, like trucks and chainsaws, is running properly and taking inventory of important signage as well.

In the case of an event, our crews will be ready, and we want you to be ready, too.

Use DriveNC.gov, which provides real-time traffic and travel information for North Carolina, and during a major storm, NCDOT updates the site to include the latest weather-related impacts to transportation.

Traveling to the U.S. Open in Pinehurst

There's still a few more days of the U.S. Open tournament in Pinehurst, bringing thousands to the area, and NCDOT is helping you get there.

Hundreds of people will take the sold out “Open Express" train, which runs through June 16 between Raleigh Union Station and the Pinehurst Clubhouse.

For those traveling by car, make sure to visit DriveNC.gov for the latest traffic information.

Highway Dedicated to Former Representative

A five-mile section of Interstate 40 in Sampson County now bears the name of Former State Representative Larry M Bell.

During a recent ceremony, the signs were unveiled in recognition of the lifelong Sampson County resident.

In addition to his time in the General Assembly, Bell served as a Sampson County commissioner and a former superintendent for Sampson County Schools.
