SUNBURY – The N.C. Department of Transportation is making initial plans for a project to improve safety on approximately 18 miles of N.C. 32 in Chowan and Gates counties.
The improvements, which will include wider travel lanes and shoulders, will run from the Virginia state line to the intersection of N.C. 32 and Gliden Road near the community of Sign Pine in Chowan County. As part of those efforts, the project will relocate existing utilities, replace three culverts and one bridge and reconstruct roadside drainage.
In addition, the project will study changes to intersections with Silver Springs Road, U.S. 158, and Folly Road in Sunbury. The intersections will be studied for speed compliance, sightlines, signage and roadway geometry and improvements could include the installation of turn lanes and curbs.
Once a more detailed plan is developed, NCDOT will schedule public meetings to gather input from area residents and local officials.
Construction is expected to begin in 2031.
