NCDOT Awards Grant Funds to Seven Airports for Aviation Career Education Academies

The N. C. Department of Transportation's Division of Aviation has awarded seven airports grants of up to $3,000 each to host aviation and aerospace-themed summer academies for elementary, middle and high school students.

At these academies, students engage in hands-on activities and educational workshops, providing them with valuable insights into the career possibilities in aviation.  Participants have the opportunity to fly drones, learn about aviation careers, and explore aerospace technology. Also, the camps may include exciting field trips to aerospace facilities, allowing students to immerse themselves in real-world experiences and interact with industry professionals.

The following airports were awarded ACE Academy grants:

  • Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport in Monroe County
  • Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Field in Bladen County
  • Fayetteville Regional Airport in Cumberland County
  • Kinston Regional Jetport in Lenoir County
  • Smith Reynolds Airport in Forsyth County
  • Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County
  • Washington-Warren Airport in Beaufort County

NCDOT encourages airports to participate in this Federal Aviation Administration-aligned talent initiative by supplementing some of their vendor and supply costs. Past ACE academies have purchased such items as flight simulators, field trip tickets, aircraft rides, model rocket kits and safety materials.

The academies aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills and inspiration needed to pursue fulfilling careers in aviation. By providing access to engaging and educational experiences, these academies will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the aviation industry by fostering interest and enthusiasm in aviation among young learners.

Parents and students interested in participating in this year's ACE Academies can learn more by visiting the NCDOT web page devoted to the academies, which contains contact information for each.
