This Week at NCDOT: Holiday Construction Halted, DMV Teen Driver Law, Office of Civil Rights Opportunities Tour

RALEIGH - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Holiday Construction Halted

Major construction is being halted to keep traffic flowing for holiday travel.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily halt most construction activity along major interstates, U.S. and key N.C. routes from the morning of Dec. 22 through the evening of Jan. 02.

Lane closures will stay in place on select projects such as Interstate 40 in Haywood County.

Be sure to visit DriveNC.gov before heading out the door to get the most up-to-date traffic information.

DMV Teen Driver Law

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles wants to remind teen drivers and their parents of legislative changes made to the Graduated Driver License system.

Starting Jan. 1, teen drivers will need to have their Level 1 Limited Learner Permit for nine months instead of the current six months before being able to get their Level 2 Limited Provisional License.

Teen drivers seeking a Level 2 license are required to: be at least 16 years old; log 60 hours of driving time; pass a road test; and show printed proof of insurance in the teen driver’s name.

Andrea L. Harris Dedication

Drivers on Interstate 85 will see new signs on a section  near the Vance/Warren County line that’s been dedicated to civil rights activist Andrea L. Harris.

The N.C. Department of Transportation honored Dr. Harris because of the work she did to help many of North Carolina’s underserved communities and businesses.

Office of Civil Rights Opportunities Tour

NCDOT’s Office of Civil Rights will host more bilingual workshops for  small Hispanic businesses interested in contract work with the state agency.

The first- bilingual workshop was in Charlotte earlier this month, and building on that success more are set for next year.

Secretary Commencement Address

Finally, NCDOT Secretary of Transportation Joey Hopkins had the opportunity to speak at N.C. State University’s Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering’s most recent graduation.

This was particularly meaningful as this is the same program Hopkins graduated from over 30 years ago.

Congratulations and good luck to all the graduates.
