Johnston County Access to NCDOT Facility Will Change

Swift Creek Road bridge

The girders (shown above earlier this month) have been set for the Swift Creek Road bridge that will span U.S. 70.

WILSON'S MILLS – The access to an N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance compound in Johnson County will permanently change next week.

A service road has recently been constructed between Wilson's Mills Road and the NCDOT facility on U.S. 70. Beginning Nov. 1, the public will need to use the new service road to reach the site, which includes a maintenance yard, an equipment shop and a roadside environmental garage.

The change is needed because a state highway contractor is upgrading this portion of U.S. 70 through the town of Wilson's Mills to become the future Interstate 42. The project requires the construction of two interchanges with bridges, as well as the permanent closure of several median openings and side-street intersections.

One such median at the NCDOT site was closed In August. and another highway entrance opposite Bear Farm Road will close Wednesday.

Construction began in 2021, and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024, as this NCDOT website explains.
