Improvements On the Way for Two Mecklenburg Bridges

CHARLOTTE The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $1 million contract to the Truesdell Corporation out of Arizona to improve two bridges on Interstate 485 at Oakdale Road in Charlotte.

The contract includes applying a saline deck treatment and polyester polymer concrete (PPC) overlay on the bridge approaches and roadway slabs to the bridges on I-485 Inner and Outer. The saline treatment is a cost-effective method used to prevent bridge deck deterioration caused by concrete corrosion. It penetrates the concrete to form a protective layer.

The PPC overlay was first introduced to North Carolina through a pilot project in 2016. The material, a combination of resin and aggregates, results in a highly durable bridge deck overlay and long service life.

Crews can start the project as early as mid-August, with completion set for spring 2024. The contract restricts lane closures to overnight hours and pauses work during inclement weather and major holidays.

Drivers are reminded to use caution and remain alert approaching work zones.
