Raleigh - The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
National Work Zone Awareness Week
The annual spring campaign is held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through work zones.
This Wednesday, employees were encouraged to wear orange to show pride and support to fellow employees who work in work zones.
When traveling through a work zone, motorists should slow down, be alert, and obey all signs including any for reduced speed limits.
BeRailSafe Training
Rail-safety emergency response training took place earlier this month as part of the department’s Be Rail Safe program.
The initiative provided free training to police, fire, and 911 dispatchers, specializing sessions for each group in the event of a rail emergency.
The Be Rail Safe campaign is NCDOT’s statewide safety initiative aimed at educating children and adults about the dangers of being on and around railroad tracks.
NC By Train Record Ridership
Record ridership continues for NCByTrain. After a record breaking 2022, NC By Train, North Carolina’s intercity passenger rail service, achieved
record ridership for the first quarter of 2023.
From January through March, the Carolinian and Piedmont trains carried over 135,000 passengers, up more than 50% over last year’s first quarter.
