RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Alligator River Bridge Federal Grant
A decades old bridge in eastern North Carolina is a step closer to being replaced thanks to a federal grant.
The
Alligator River Bridge on U.S. 64 between Tyrrell and Dare Counties and a broadband project in the area will receive a
$110 million federal Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The proposed replacement project would build a new two-lane fixed-span bridge just to the north of the old one, allowing both marine and vehicle traffic to pass unimpeded. NCDOT is planning for construction to begin no later than 2025.
Apply for Free Bike Helmets
Bicycle helmets save lives and prevent serious injuries.
As part of the annual Bicycle Helmet Initiative to encourage more children to wear helmets, NCDOT will give free protective headwear to organizations across the state to give to young cyclists.
Organizations must
apply online with NCDOT’s Integrated Mobility Division by 5 p.m. Feb. 4.
Aviation Art Contest
The theme for 2023 is “Air Sports & the Environment” and allows children 6 to 17 who live or attend school in North Carolina the chance to explore different aspects of aviation.
