RALEIGH - N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP) Assistant Director Dr. Cheryl Leonard was recently presented with the Foundation Champion Award by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) for her efforts to educate the public on workzone safety and honor those killed in NC work zones.

ATSSA Board Chair David Krahulec and ATSSA Carolinas Chapter President Tom Bell presented Leonard with the award during a ceremony on Feb. 1 in Wilson.

In April 2021, Leonard, NCGHSP and others partnered with ATSSA to bring the Work Zone Awareness and National Memorial Display to North Carolina to educate the motoring public about slowing down in work zones and honor those who died in NC work zones, including workers, motorists, pedestrians, law enforcement officers, emergency workers and children.
