CLAYTON – A Johnston County intersection will be made into an all-way stop to improve safety.
The traffic services unit for the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to complete the conversion of Barber Mill and Jack roads south of Clayton on Nov. 17. The crews will start around 9 a.m. and finish by lunchtime, so drivers should be cautious traveling through the area during that timeframe. Rain could cause the work to be rescheduled.
Currently, drivers on Barber Mill Road do not stop. An NCDOT study in 2010 found a 68% drop in crashes – and a 77% decrease of crashes involving fatalities or serious injuries – after such al-way stops were installed.

The following are reminders when drivers encounter them:
- The first vehicle at the intersection has the right-of-way;
- When two or more vehicles reach an intersection at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right-of-way and may go straight or, if legal and after signaling, turn left or right;
- When two facing vehicles approach an intersection simultaneously, both drivers can move straight ahead or turn right. If one driver is going straight while the other wants to turn left, the driver who wants to turn left must yield; and
Even with the right-of-way, drivers should remember to use appropriate turn signals and watch for pedestrians and other vehicles.
