Halifax-Northampton County Bridge Replacement Planned

ROANOKE RAPIDS – The state Transportation Department is seeking public feedback on a plan to replace the N.C. 48 bridge spanning the Roanoke River.

The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to replace the 64-year-old bridge with a wider, modern structure alongside the existing one. The new bridge will retain its two lanes, but they will be wider, along with expanded shoulders.

Construction is slated to begin in 2025 and take up to two years to complete. During construction, the existing bridge will remain open to traffic, but the Gaston Boating Access area will be closed. The boating area will reopen after construction is completed.

Anyone with comments, suggestions or questions about the plan should contact the department's project design team by Nov. 12. The department has launched this website with further details, including how to contact the design team by email or phone number.
