New Traffic Signal to Reduce Crashes in Boonville

BOONVILLE – An old intersection in Yadkin County is getting a new upgrade.

N.C. Department of Transportation crews will be installing a traffic signal the intersection of N.C. 67 and Smithtown/Nebo Road this week in order to reduce the number of crashes.

A 10-year crash analysis of this intersection revealed 45 crashes, a higher rate than the state average for similar rural intersections.

The traffic signal replaces a flasher system which flashed yellow for vehicles on N.C. 67 and flashed red for traffic on Smithtown/Nebo Road. The new signal will operate as any basic traffic signal with green, yellow and red lights. Traffic engineers will adjust the timing as of each cycle as necessary in the near future.

Transportation officials anticipate completing the installation late this week, weather permitting, and the signal should be fully operational by Oct. 4.
