Lane Closures Start on Mecklenburg County Bridge Next Week

CHARLOTTE – Beginning Monday night, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will start preservation work on the U.S. 29/N.C. 49 connector bridge over Interstate 85 South, as part of a $15.3 million contract to improve approximately seven miles of highway between exits 36 and 42 in Charlotte.

To protect workers and drivers, one of two travel lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night through the end of October, as weather permits. The contract also permits overnight lane closures on weekends.

The preservation work includes applying deck sealant, repairing bridge joints and painting bridge seats, the areas where girders rest on the bridge's end bent. These improvements will extend the bridge's service life and condition.

The contract, awarded in July, also calls for milling and paving travel lanes and adding pavement markings and snow-plowable pavement markers. Entrance and exit ramps will also be improved at interchanges within the project limits.

The project is scheduled to be complete by May 2023.
