BUIES CREEK – State transportation officials welcome public input this month on a plan to build a pair of roundabouts in Harnett County.
The circular intersections would be constructed at the junctions of Old Stage and Sheriff Johnson roads and at Old Stage Road and Leslie Campbell Avenue. Both locations are between the towns of Buies Creek and Coats.
In 2018, the N.C. Department of Transportation installed all-way stops at both junctions as an interim safety measure. The proposed roundabouts are scheduled to be awarded under one contract in the fall of 2022.
Roundabouts improve safety by slowing drivers down and reducing the risk of crashes. The design also improves traffic flow by eliminating the stop-and-go nature of a traditional intersection. Learn more at NCDOT’s roundabout page.
As part of the same project, the NCDOT would reroute the access point of Sheriff Johnson Road at N.C. 27 near the roundabouts to improve safety.
Planners will use feedback received through July 23 to help fine-tune the designs. The public may find project details at this NCDOT website. People may use the project website to submit questions or feedback on the proposal.
