SELMA – A new traffic pattern aimed at improving safety is coming to a Johnston County crossroads.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is scheduled to upgrade N.C. 39 at Old Beulah Road outside Selma into an all-way stop Wednesday. The work will begin in the morning and be completed by about lunchtime.
The project will include installing stops signs and a “stop ahead” yellow warning on N.C. 39. The upgrade is intended to reduce serious crashes. According to departmental analysis, most of the 30 crashes that occurred in this intersection over a 10-year period involved head-on collisions that left 18 injured.
Drivers should slow down, obey workers controlling traffic and proceed through the intersection with caution during its reconstruction.
According to a study by NCDOT of 53 intersections that were converted into all-way stops, crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries decreased on average by 77 percent.
People can visit the department’s all-way stop page for more information.
