This Week at NCDOT: National Award, Extra Mile and Highway Dedication

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Highway Division 14 Wins National Award

Highway Division 14 – in western North Carolina – has won a prestigious national award for efforts in planning a highway project in Graham County known as Corridor K Improvements.

The project calls for improving N.C. 143 between Robbinsville and Stecoah and a section of N.C. 28 in Stecoah. It includes a unique, 270-foot-wide land bridge that will relocate a section of the Appalachian Trail and serve as a migratory route for animals, including bear, deer and elk.

The National Association of Environmental Professionals awarded the division with the Environmental Excellence Award in Environmental Management, Stewardship, Conservation and Protection during its annual awards.

Onslow County Employees Honored for Going "Extra Mile"

Four Onslow County maintenance employees are being honored for their heroic efforts while on the job.

Last month, the crew was traveling on Gregory Fork Road near Banks Bridge Road when they came across a car with flashers on and a man trying to get help, flagging them down. They then saw an SUV flipped upside down in the nearby creek and were alerted a woman was trapped inside. The NCDOT maintenance crew rushed to the vehicle, freeing her from the SUV and possibly saving her life.

Each of the employees was presented with the Extra Mile Award by Transportation Sec. Eric Boyette during this month’s Board of Transportation meeting. The Extra Mile Award honors employees or contractors for service that exceeds their normal duties.

Highway Dedicated to Goldsboro Mayor

A 5-mile segment of the U.S. 70 Bypass in Goldsboro has been dedicated to the city’s mayor, Chuck Allen, who has been an advocate for local transportation projects. The section of highway between North Berkeley Boulevard and North Beston Road in Goldsboro is now known as “Chuck Allen Highway.”

State Transportation Secretary Boyette and former Secretary Jim Trogdon were among the speakers at the dedication.
