U.S. 29 Interchange in Guilford County Set for Makeover

GREENSBORO – Work will soon get underway on a project to reconstruct the U.S. 29 interchange with Reedy Fork Parkway in Guilford County.

The project calls for replacing the existing interchange, shifting it south and modifying the design to a diverging diamond, and realigning Summit Avenue where it joins Reedy Fork Parkway. The existing bridge over the highway was built in 1961 and meets criteria for replacement with a modern structure.

Diverging diamond interchanges allow free-flowing turns on and off a highway, reducing congestion, and have shown to significantly reduce crashes. Learn more about this design on the N.C. Department of Transportation's safety and mobility webpage.

Build NC Bonds have been earmarked to help pay for the $46.3 million contract, recently awarded to the Thompson Arthur division of APAC Atlantic Inc. The work can begin as early as June 2 and is expected to be substantially complete by May 2024.

Drivers should expect various lane closures in this area as work progresses over the next few years to demolish and rebuild the interchange.
