Cumberland County Roundabout Proposed by NCDOT

HOPE MILLS – People may provide feedback about a proposed roundabout that would improve the safety and traffic flow of a Cumberland County intersection.

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes upgrading the junction of John McMillan and Chickenfoot roads south of Hope Mills into a roundabout. Details about the proposed project can be found at this NCDOT website. Construction is scheduled to start in late 2022.

A roundabout improves safety for drivers and pedestrians, and it alleviates congestion and backups that can occur at traditional intersections. To learn more, including how to easily navigate them, visit the department's roundabout webpage.

The department will consider comments received by May 25 toward the final design of the project. People may submit comments or ask questions of the project design team via the following ways:

  • Call 512-580-8850 and enter project code 5854
  • Write or call Jason Hatfield, a Division 6 project engineer, P.O. Box 1150, Fayetteville, NC 28302. He may be reached at 910-364-0603.

The department converted the intersection into an all-way stop in 2018 as in interim safety measure until a roundabout could be funded, designed and constructed. The all-way conversion was the result of an analysis of 10 years of crash data. Nearly all 31 crashes that occurred there in that period were the result of drivers on John McMillian Road who had failed to stop or yield to the right of way.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled people who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Tony Gallagher at 919-707-6069 or magallagher@ncdot.gov as early as possible to make arrangements.

Those who do not speak English, or have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English, may receive interpretive services upon request prior by calling 1-800-481-6494.
