Bridge Demolition Brings Overnight Interstate Closures

GARNER – Bridge demolition as part of the widening project from Southeast Raleigh to Clayton will require overnight closures of Interstate 40 West beginning Sunday night.

There will be 30-minute closures approaching the old southernmost Rock Quarry Road bridge over the interstate so it can be taken down safely. They will be in place Sunday through Thursday nights between midnight and 5 a.m. for the next two weeks for the westbound lanes, and then crews will put the same brief closures in place for the eastbound side of the highway for the following two to three weeks. There are no closures planned for Friday or Saturday nights.

Drivers need to slow down and use extra caution when going through the work zone. They also need to pay very close attention when approaching the highway closures.

In advance of the bridge demolition, crews will need to shift traffic onto to the new bridge over I-40. To do that, crews will reduce traffic to one lane for both directions of Rock Quarry Road while pavement tie-ins are completed and markings are installed. Flaggers will alternate traffic direction during the closure.

Drivers should expect delays throughout the day tomorrow and consider alternate routes.
