TARBORO – A 70-year-old bridge on N.C. 97 will be replaced with a modern structure.
The bridge crossing Swift Creek north of Tarboro has reached its natural lifespan. National Bridge Builders LLC of Kernersville will demolish the current structure and then construct a new bridge, according to a nearly $2 million contract the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded this month. The bid was the lowest, and 12% below engineering estimates.
Work may start after May 1, and the contractor will have until July 2022 to finish the project and reopen the road.
When the project begins, a marked detour will send drivers, if they are headed north, to turn right onto Tree Farm Road; left onto West Logsboro Road; left onto N.C. 33; returning to N.C. 97. Drivers going south on N.C. 97 will follow the same detour in reverse.
