Drivers will maintain full access to and from Toll N.C. 540 and should follow detour routes.
RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction of the southern portion of the Complete 540 project, which will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from N.C. 55 Bypass to Interstate 40.
Contractors for the project have scheduled temporary loop closures on N.C. 55 to and from Toll N.C. 540. The loops will be closed from Friday, Dec. 11, at approximately 8 p.m. until Saturday, Dec. 12 at about 6 a.m. Drivers should plan to take the detour route(s) by following signs on the roadway.
Contractors for the project have also scheduled temporary loop closures on N.C. 55 to and from Toll N.C. 540 from Friday, Dec. 18, at approximately 8 p.m. until Monday, Dec. 21, at about 6 a.m. so crews can safely complete construction of a temporary loop on the northeast side of the N.C. 55/Toll N.C. 540 interchange. The temporary weekend loop closures activity is weather permitting. Drivers should plan to take the detour route(s) by following signs on the roadway.
Motorists on Toll N.C. 540 Southbound (SB) who want to access N.C. 55 Westbound (WB) should exit onto N.C. 55 Eastbound (EB) and make a U-turn at Old Smithfield Road. Drivers on N.C. 55 WB who want to access Toll N.C. 540 Northbound (NB) should continue on N.C. 55 and make a U-turn at East Williams Street.
Drivers should use caution and slow down while traveling through work zones and detour routes.
