MORRISVILLE – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors are scheduled to change the way eastbound traffic accesses RDU from Interstate 40 via Airport Boulevard.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, the loop from I-40 East to eastbound Airport Boulevard (Exit 284B) heading toward the airport will close permanently.
Upon closure of the loop, motorists will use the ramp currently marked for westbound Airport Boulevard (Exit 284A) to head toward the airport. A new lane has been added to this exit ramp and will allow for a left turn toward RDU. As part of this change, the interchange will drop the A/B designation and become Exit 284.
This work is part of the improvements at the interchange which include converting it to a diverging diamond design, replacing the current bridge over I-40 with two new ones, adding auxiliary lanes on I-40 in both directions and converting Airport Boulevard to a four-lane divided roadway within the project limits.
Construction started earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in 2023.
