Shelby Bridge Closed for Safety Precaution

SHELBY – The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed a bridge on N.C. 180 northeast of Shelby in Cleveland County as a safety precaution.

A beam end under the bridge between N.C. 150 and Airport Road that carries traffic over CSX Railroad tracks has deteriorated. The department immediately closes a bridge if there is any safety issue.

Engineers will conduct a comprehensive inspection on the 69-year-old bridge to determine the extent of needed repairs and a timeline completing the process. Hopefully, the bridge can be opened later this month.

During the closure, a detour has northbound drivers turning left on U.S. Business 74 (Marion Street), then right on N.C. 18 (DeKalb Street), which becomes East Grover Street, and then Fallston Road to get back to N.C. 180. Southbound drivers will follow that detour in reverse, staying on N.C. 18 at its intersection with N.C. 180.
