TARBORO – The traffic pattern for a two-block section of East Church Street in downtown Tarboro will permanently change next week.
At the town’s request, the N.C. Department of Transportation will convert the one-way street between North Main Street (N.C. 53) and Saint Patrick Street into a two-way traffic pattern.
The work is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will take most of the day, weather permitting. Department employees have to:
- Remove the One Way, No Left Turn and Do Not Enter signs;
- Add a left-turn lane on North Main Street at East Church Street;
- Erect a stop sign on East Church Street at Saint Andrews streets; and
- Add pavement markings, such as stop bars and arrows.
Additionally, transportation officials will remove the on-street parking on the right side of East Church Street, as drivers are headed toward North Main Street. This will enable two blocks to be converted.
Flaggers will direct traffic and temporarily stop drivers during the work. People should travel slowly and cautiously in the work area.
