Gaston County Road Getting Improved Signal System

BELMONT – A stretch of U.S. 74 (Wilkinson Boulevard) will soon see upgraded traffic signals, thanks to a $780,000 contract the N.C. Department of Transportation awarded to World Fiber Technologies LLC of Alpharetta, Ga.

The improvements between N.C. 7 and Wesleyan Boulevard include implementing a coordinated closed loop signal system that can adjust signal timing based on traffic demand. The contractor will replace 14 signal cabinets and install six miles of fiber optic cable and six closed circuit cameras to monitor traffic conditions. This system will help reduce the length of time that cars idle, reducing emissions and pollutants into the air.

No additional property will need to be acquired to complete the project.

Work can begin as soon as the end of July, with completion scheduled for May 1, 2020.

This is one of six road and bridge projects recently awarded by the Department, at a cost of nearly $53.8 million.
