Lee County Railroad Work Requires Temporary Closure of S. Horner Blvd.

SANFORD – Two sections of South Horner Boulevard (U.S. 421 Business) will close in both directions starting Sunday night to allow Atlantic and Western Railroad to replace a pair of railroad crossings.

The N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews will assist the railroad by hauling away the crossing debris and paving the gap between the highway and the new crossings to ensure a smooth ride for motorists.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the northern railroad crossing near Taco Bell will be closed, allowing the upgrade to begin at dawn Monday. If the weather cooperates, the improvements will be completed, and the road reopened by Tuesday evening.

Then, the department will close the southern railroad crossing near the AutoZone on Tuesday evening, with a goal of completing the work and reopening the highway by next Thursday evening.

The following shows the signed detour for each closure.

Northern railroad crossing:

  • Southbound traffic: Right onto Lee Avenue, left at Main Street (N.C. 78), returning to South Horner Boulevard.
  • Northbound traffic: right onto Bragg Street, left onto Seventh Street, left onto Rose Street and returning to South Horner Boulevard.

Southern railroad crossing:

  • Southbound traffic: Right onto Lee Avenue, left at Main Street (N.C. 78), returning to South Horner Boulevard.
  • Northbound traffic: Right onto Main Street (N.C. 42), left onto Nash Street, left onto Bragg Street, returning to South Horner Boulevard.
