MONROE – Drivers on a section of N.C. 75 in Union County will encounter a detour starting Thursday where a roundabout is under construction.
The roundabout is being built to improve safety and traffic flow
at the intersection of N.C. 75, Rocky River Road and Old Waxhaw Monroe Road west of Monroe.
The closure will allow an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor to safely connect the highway to the roundabout and pave and stripe the area. The closure is expected to last two weeks, if the weather cooperates.
A detour will guide eastbound N.C. 75 drivers to turn left onto South Potter Road, then right onto New Town Road and back to N.C. 75. Westbound highway traffic will follow the same route in reverse.
Roundabouts improve safety because drivers slow down going through them. They also eliminate the stop-and-go nature of conventional intersections. This new
NCDOT video explains how to move through a roundabout. The media may download this
broadcast quality version of the video.
In January, the department awarded the $1.1 million contract to Boggs Paving Inc. of Monroe. The roundabout is scheduled to open to traffic in July.
