CHARLOTTE - Media are invited to join Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles Wednesday, June 19 at 1 p.m. as she applies for her
REAL ID at North Carolina’s newest and largest driver license office. The office is located at 9711 David Taylor Drive.
“I have to fly frequently, so having my REAL ID is the best option for people like me to make it through security checkpoints quickly and efficiently,” Lyles said. “Plus, this gives me the perfect opportunity to visit this great new DMV facility in north Charlotte so we can show people all it has to offer.”
Starting in October 2020, people will be required to have a REAL ID or valid U.S. passport for flying, entering federal facilities and visiting military installations. Without a REAL ID, residents will need to provide additional federal-accepted documentation to fly or access federal facilities.
Mayor Lyles will be joined on Wednesday by officials with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, who can answer questions about REAL ID and the new driver license office.
The office, the state’s largest with 15 work stations, opened in March to prepare for the summer rush. It’s open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday. The office is equipped to help people get or renew driver licenses, learners permits, REAL IDs and basic identification cards. Examiners at the office also conduct road tests for new drivers.
