WAYNESVILLE – A road repair project will require the closure of U.S. 276 on Waynesville Mountain between the Bethel Community and Waynesville for two days next week. The excessive rain the area received this Spring caused a large hump to develop in the roadway, and it must be removed for safety reasons.
The closure will begin at 8 a.m. on May 22, with the road scheduled to re-open by 6 a.m. on May 24, in time for Memorial Day weekend. Haywood County maintenance crews will spend that time digging out the roadway and then leveling out the surface.
Message boards are already up to alert travelers of the upcoming closure. The detour route for drivers traveling from Bethel to Waynesville will send them north on N.C. 110 to U.S. 23; the west to US 74, and west to get back to U.S. 276. Motorists heading to the Bethel community will follow the same route in reverse.
Drivers are urged to use caution as they approach the work zone, and to pay attention to detour signs. They should anticipate needing extra time to travel through the area.
