KINGS MOUNTAIN – Motorists will soon drive through a new traffic pattern at the intersection of Kings Mountain Boulevard and Margrace Road. Asphalt Paving of Shelby Inc. was awarded a $953,000 contract in December to convert the existing intersection into a
roundabout.
A roundabout is intended to provide safer driving conditions, as going through an intersection at slower speeds reduces the frequency and severity of accidents. Travel time is also reduced with the elimination of the stop-and-go conditions of signalized and four-way stop intersections.
Currently, drivers on Margrace Road must stop, while those on Kings Mountain Boulevard have the right of way.
The contractor will close the intersection on Monday, May 6 to safely build the roundabout. A signed detour will take drivers onto N.C. 216, Bethlehem Road and Phifer Road.
The roundabout should be open to traffic by the end of August.
