Overnight Closures Planned for Exits at Major Interchange in Forsyth County

WINSTON-SALEM – A pair of exits at the junction of U.S. 421, Interstate 40 and Business 40 in west Winston-Salem will close overnight next week while paving is conducted in the area.

The ramp from southbound U.S. 421 onto I-40 East (Exit 238) will be closed from 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 until 6 a.m. the next morning. Because it ties into that ramp, the exit loop from Business 40 West onto I-40 East will also be closed during the same hours.

The following detours will be in place to help drivers access I-40 East while the exits are closed:

  • From southbound U.S. 421: Take Exit 239 (Jonestown Road) and continue straight onto Hanes Mall Boulevard, turn left onto Stratford Road (U.S. 158), and turn left to access I-40 East.
  • From westbound Business 40: Continue on U.S. 421 North and take Exit 239 (Jonestown Road), turn left onto Jonestown Road, turn left onto Hanes Mall Boulevard, turn left onto Stratford Road (U.S. 158), and turn left again for I-40 East.

Drivers should slow down near the work zone and plan for extra travel time for the detours.

This work is part of a $17.5 million project to rehabilitate pavement along 6 miles of I-40 between Winston-Salem and Clemmons.
