Bridge Preservation Project Coming to Wayne County

GOLDSBORO – A state Department of Transportation contractor will do preservation work that will extend the life of the U.S. 13/70/117 bridge spanning North George Street in northwest Goldsboro.

The contractor, American Contracting & Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana, will sandblast and paint the steel beams, resurface the concrete deck and restripe the roadway. The bridge, built in 1972, covers both directions of the four-lane highway.

The contractor may start work between April 1 and July 1; once the project is underway, it will have four months to complete the rehabilitation. The department awarded the $1 million contract in February.

The work will require lane closures, but the bridge will remain open. The contractor will not be allowed to reduce lanes during the morning (6 to 9 a.m.) or afternoon (4 to 7 p.m.) commutes.

Drivers should be alert, drive the speed limit and follow construction signs through the work zone.

Information on when the project begins and when lanes are closed will be posted at DriveNC.gov.

This is one of 21 major highway and bridge projects awarded this month by the NCDOT. Per state law they went to the lowest bidder among qualified contractors. They are worth $331.5 million, more than $57 million under engineer estimates.
