ASHEVILLE — Two new bridges are coming to a mountain county.
The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded two
contracts to replace bridges in Yancey County.
A bridge on Possum Trot Road over Possum Trot Creek will be
replaced by Dane Construction of Mooresville for $1.03 million. The work
includes grading, paving, drainage and the installation of a culvert.
On N.C. 80, a bridge over Browns Creeks will be replaced by Wright
Brothers Construction of Charleston, Tenn. The $1.24 million project includes
grading, draining, and paving.
Both projects can begin as early as April 15, and the new bridges
should be open in October, with vegetation enhancements wrapping up in 2019.
These are two of 16 road and bridge projects recently awarded by
the NCDOT. Per state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each
project. The contracts are worth $139.6 million, $1.8 million less than engineer
estimates.
